OTNow Privacy Policy

OTNow is an unofficial browser extension for Ontario Tech students. Coursework remains on the student's device. Anonymous product statistics are separate, optional, and off by default.

Information the extension reads

With the student's existing signed-in Canvas session, OTNow reads active course names and codes, dated planner items, due dates, Canvas links, planner completion states, and the current student's submission status for those items.

02

How the information is used

This information is used only to display deadlines, preserve an offline cache, detect changed due dates, apply local deadline adjustments entered by the student, update the toolbar badge, and schedule reminders requested by the student.

03

Local storage

Course information, settings, manual check-offs, student-entered deadline adjustments, reminder history, and the totals shown in the personal Insights view are stored locally through Chrome extension storage. A deadline adjustment changes only OTNow's display and reminder schedule; it does not change Canvas.

Insights records only local counters and opaque Canvas item identifiers needed to avoid counting the same deadline twice; it does not retain coursework titles for measurement. OTNow does not sell information or use it for advertising, profiling, or model training. OTNow does not collect passwords or authentication tokens.

04

Optional, opt-in anonymous statistics

On first run, OTNow presents Share anonymous statistics and Not now. Neither choice is preselected. Choosing Not now sends nothing. The feature can later be changed through Help measure OTNow in Settings.

When enabled, OTNow normally sends no more than one anonymous numerical report per day containing:

  • a random installation identifier generated by OTNow;
  • the installed OTNow version;
  • cumulative counts of dated Canvas items organized by general item type;
  • cumulative counts of reminders delivered, changed deadlines detected, manual check-offs, successful Canvas refreshes, and days used; and
  • an optional whole-number rating from 1 to 5, only when the student chooses one.
Never included: names, course names or codes, assignment or quiz titles, URLs, due dates, grades, emails, student numbers, Canvas identifiers, passwords, authentication data, or general browsing history.

The random installation identifier is hashed before database storage. The statistics service uses these numbers only for aggregate product statistics. It does not support advertising or student profiling.

The service is hosted on Cloudflare Workers and stores rows in Cloudflare D1. Public totals may use compact display labels when a number becomes too wide for the layout; hovering the displayed value reveals its exact count. Cloudflare may process ordinary network and security metadata as the hosting provider, but OTNow does not place IP addresses or user-agent strings in its statistics database.

05

Website ratings and Google Form feedback

The public OTNow statistics page lets a visitor submit a whole-number rating from 1 to 5. The rating service stores only the selected number and submission time. It does not place an email address, account identifier, extension installation identifier, IP address, or user-agent string in the database.

Written feedback is handled through a separate Google Form. The form does not collect email addresses, and the name field is optional. Responses are saved to a private Google Sheet and are not published automatically. Google may process ordinary network, account, and security metadata under its own terms when the form is opened or submitted.

06

Network access

OTNow connects to https://learn.ontariotechu.ca through read-only GET requests to Canvas course and planner endpoints. It does not modify course content or submit work.

Only after the student enables anonymous statistics may OTNow connect to https://otnow-stats.sil6428-archtech.workers.dev to send or delete the numerical report described above. No remotely hosted code is downloaded or executed.

Copies installed manually from GitHub retrieve OTNow's public manifest.json about every six hours to compare version numbers. The Chrome Web Store package disables this request because Chrome supplies automatic extension updates.

07

Retention and deletion

Saved local information remains on the Chrome profile until the student uses Delete all OTNow data, clears extension data, or removes the extension. That control also deletes personal Insights totals.

Turning anonymous statistics off asks the service to delete that installation's aggregate database row, then removes the random identifier and optional network permission from Chrome. Aggregate rows that have not reported for 180 days are automatically deleted. Removing the extension without first turning sharing off cannot send a deletion request, so the 180-day expiry applies.

08

Affiliation

OTNow is an independent student project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Ontario Tech University or Instructure.
